Custodial History
The archives, especially those for the early period and the series Letters Received and Letters Despatched for the period 1845 - 1865, are incomplete. The incompleteness can partly be attributed to the carelessness at times in the administration of the district and also to the fire of 17 May 1865, in which more than thirty houses in Swellendam and numerous documents were destroyed. The documents of the Clerk of the Peace and the Chief Constable were saved and are therefore reasonably complete. A few other documents, including the contents of the safe were also saved, but many valuable documents, especially those of the main office, were lost. [1]
