Content and Structure

The Leibbrandt Manuscript series (LM) comprises transcriptions, translations, precis or short summaries of original documents in the Cape Town Archives Depository, Cape Town. The series also includes various finding aids on original sources in the form of registers, lists, indexes and catalogues.
Where applicable the LM volumes refer to the relevant series or volumes in the archives of the Council of Policy, Court of Justice, British Occupation, Batavian Republic, Colonial Office, Government House and the Magistrate of Graaff - Reinet. The respective inventories of these archive groups should thus be consulted in conjunction with this inventory to gain full benefit. In some cases the specific volumes or series to which LM volumes refer are quoted in footnotes in these inventories.
The LM volumes also refer to the relevant series or volumes in the Verbatim Copies series housed in this depot.
The LM manuscripts and finding aids are mostly compiled in English though a few exist in Dutch or Afrikaans. Some indexes and lists also appear in typescript.
Although known as the Leibbrandt Manuscripts many volumes were compiled by various archives staff members in later years and were apparently added to this series. The names of those responsible frequently appear at the end of the volume concerned.
Various publications are supplementary to this series, the most relevant being the 'Leibbrandt Precis' of 20 volumes. Volumes 1 - 17 were published in the period 1896 - 1906 while the last three volumes were published in reduced facsimile in 1989.
