Reconstruction of the archives of the VOC establishments

The aggregation of the descriptions of all VOC records in the world in one database provides for a virtual reconstruction of the administration of all 35 VOC establishments (kantoren), even when the original administration of the establishments has been lost.

In addition to the 35 listed kantoren, the VOC managed dozens of onderkantoren: trading posts and forts which for a shorter or longer period were subordinate to one of the listed establishments. Some of the 35 listed kantoren started or ended as a subordinate onderkantoor. The documents of the subordinate onderkantoren have been described in separate series in the reconstruction of the establishments.

Regularly, descriptions will be added to the VOC database, so the virtual reconstruction will expand likewise.
